The world seems to be back in order around these parts. The plague has left the lands (or at least the lands of my apartment) and the weather is slightly less horrendous. I even got back to the gym yesterday for the first time in a number of weeks. I imagine that by the time you’re reading this I will be sitting on my couch wondering why I can’t move my legs—but that’s what I get for being sick and going away and not picking up heavies. Give it a week or so and I’ll be back to not being crippled.
Writing has been fun. I did something that I suppose extends the book out a bit longer than I’d anticipated, but actually shortens it up in the long run. I’m adding some stuff onto the very end, where it explains a lot of the stuff/plot of the middle of the book and connects it to the next in the series. This, obviously, will make the book longer, but what it has done is free up a lot of material that had happened earlier. Back then I needed new scenes and people and places to sort of… explain why things were going on. I never really liked these moments, and had planned to do something to them in the editing rounds. Now I can just chop them out and I’m totally content with that. Most of the material didn’t really need to be explained right then and there, I had just done it out of convenience because I didn’t know how to work it in later. With this new end bit, I’ve figured it out, and so goodbye weird middle bits!
What else has been going on? I’ve been on quite the roll these past days. I reworked a battle scene that I felt needed a bit more oomph to be exceptional. I still have to do up the other few similar bits early on, but I have the complexity of how I want it in mind now, so it should be a lot easier. That’s one of the nice things about writing—it’s pretty easy just to pop back in to an earlier part and make it better. No one, save for you nice folk, will ever know that I did it—to them it’ll just look like I wrote it that way the first time through (I hope?). It’s been a good week, I’ve reworked some stuff and pushed a good deal closer to the actual (new) end of the story. I think I’ll be able to significantly shorten and streamline the final version of what I send out to my test readers and that everyone will be quite happy with it. Right now there’s a lot of extra baggage, but with any luck (and a lot of hard work) that’ll all be gone before anyone else lays eyes on it.
